"..at the center of the leader's role is something more subtle and subjective--discerning, attentive oversight. Leading means watching. It requires the ability to see and sense things like Bedouin baheth" (p. 118).
Being discerning and attentive are things I have been learning that I need to do/be as a leader. In the past I so often took things at face value. What I saw, heard, was how I took things. But I have realized that there can be more going on than what is seen on the surface.
So, I appreciated this reading's challenge to be like a Bedouin baheth who attentively observes his flock and the environment being aware of the sheep, their health, their emotions, potential enemies and dangers, and so much more.
I'm grateful that as Christian leaders we have the Holy Spirit to help us with this discerning eye. I desire to listen to him more intently and to learn more what it means to see beyond the surface of things.
May I "garner the trust of both the sheep [under my care] and the Head Shepherd" (p. 117). _________________ Ron Julian |
