To me, the most striking insight from Day One's rumination (sorry, couldn't resist) on the wilderness is that the more our options are limited the more attractive God becomes. People find God in the desert because, well, there's not much else to find there. As other posters have noted, pleasant distractions often prevent us from focusing on God. And as far as I can tell from the gorgeous photography in the book, this desert doesn't even offer cacti for some visual distraction.
My question is, is reducing the number of distractions in our lives in order to focus more on God the ideal, or would it be better to learn to choose God despite many options? |
