The wilderness of Jesus day was just footsteps away from him. He did not have to get in a car and travel to the wilderness the way that we do here in America. Although, when we do take the time to put ourselves in places like the wilderness (dessert) we find that it is hard to run from ourselves. For some reason we have to start to deal with ourselves, and if we make that mistake of not drinking sufficient water we will experience dehydration, thus giving us headaches etc. This is the physical manifestation of our body letting us know that it needs water.
It is no different for us spiritually when we run dry and do not take in the "living water" described in scripture. We are not able to exhibit the fruits of the spirit, we are quick to to do anything we can to alleviate the pain. however, If we would just take the time to stop and drink in "the living water" we would notice the beauty, the wonder and just maybe that the dessert is aplace we can grow and spend time with our Saviour, knowing He experienced this before as well and we can draw strength in the midst of the pain.
