Tim Laniak says “Israel’s identity was inextricably tied to the presence of God, first demonstrated to the patriarchs and then to his chosen people in the wilderness sojourn. The tabernacle was … the place of God’s ‘dwelling’.” (p. 79). The presence of the shepherd has a deeper meaning than just a being. That is why the presence of God as a shepherd is closely related to the identity of the sheep. There is a close and a personal relationship between God and the sheep. I realized that as a pastor, I might be physically mingling with the community, but I should be able to know each parishioner as well. In pastoral caring, people may not remember what I said but people will remember when I was there and present in all their life struggles. I believe that as a shepherd, I can be emotionally present with them through effective listening, In so doing, they will also remember that God is there as well.
