I spent the summer of 1989 in Pakistan. While traveling in the Hunza valley, in northern Pakistan I took a day to explore a remote valley. As I climbed away from the village, the trail took me along a mountain stream that flowed from the high mountains above. The trail crossed the stream several times, and after an hour of climbing in the rocky terrain, a beautiful lush green hillside was spread out before me. Several hundred sheep were grazing on the hillside, feeding on its green grass.

After another 15 minutes of climbing, I approached the flock. From down below, I could not see any sign of human presence. I thought thee must be someone but, I could not see anyone.

As I approached the flock, above them was perched a small stone hut, looking over the lush hillside below. Just as I reached the first sheep on the lower reaches of the hillside, a figure appeared from the hut. A shepherd.
He looked disshelved. A moment later, a second shepherd appeared. They had been watching. They had seen me climb the valley, and approach the flock. Their watchful eyes were on the flock.

The task of watching might appear simple at first. But as noted in the reading, the task of "constantly taking inventory" is not an easy one at all. Its hard work. It requires constant faithfulness. Considering all the factors that might influence the flock is staggering. It appears one needs to be a juggler in addition to being a shepherd.

I had forgotten that leading means watching. I've been busy over the last few years with things that have not involved watching. I've had more than my share of distractions. Its hard to watch when you're busy and distracted.

Introduce the prospect of the impact of change on the flock and I'm in over my head. Being a shepherd does not appear to be that hard, until you start doing it.

Lord, keep me watching.
