In our old neighbourhood, our neighbour Alex bought himself a dog. Alex would leave for work and his newfound pet would be left in the garage. The whole development knew the hound was there because it simply would not shut up. Incessantly through the course of the day, the quite normality of the ‘burbs was disrupted by a dog that could not or would be silent. The dog only seemed to quieten down when Alex was around. The dumb dog did not seem the least bit concerned with its increasing popularity. It persisted in making a noise.
The true minister of the gospel is to make a noise whether well received or not.” Preach the Word in season out of season” the old King Jimmy, intones.
We are told that shepherds used canines to keep watch over the flocks. Their barking and yapping would signal the presence of a stranger and signal a threat to the well-being of the flock. (p.147)
